Australia Visa
The Australia Tourist and Visit Visa allows foreign nationals to travel to Australia temporarily for tourism, family visits, or business purposes. Depending on nationality, travelers may apply for one of the following:
- Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) – for tourism, family visits, or business visitor purposes; the main visa category for most applicants
- Electronic Travel Authority (ETA – Subclass 601) – for eligible passport holders, allowing short visits without a full visa application
- eVisitor (Subclass 651) – a free electronic visa for eligible European passport holders
The Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) is the most commonly used option and is divided into several streams:
- Tourist stream – for holidays, sightseeing, or visiting family and friends
- Business Visitor stream – for attending meetings, conferences, negotiations, or exploring business opportunities (without engaging in the Australian labor market)
- Sponsored Family stream – for those visiting family members who are Australian citizens or permanent residents, with sponsorship
- Approved Destination Status stream – for group tours from mainland China
Key Features
- Stay durations of 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on the stream and assessment
- Can be issued as single-entry or multiple-entry
- Validity of up to 12 months from the date of grant, allowing multiple visits within that period (multiple-entry visas)
- Does not permit paid employment or enrollment in long-term study
- Requires proof of genuine intention to visit temporarily (“Genuine Temporary Entrant” requirement)
- Requires demonstration of sufficient funds to support the visit
Who Needs This Visa?
All foreign nationals, except Australian and New Zealand citizens, require a visa to enter Australia. Depending on nationality and travel purpose, applicants may be eligible for the simpler ETA or eVisitor options, or may need to apply for the standard Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) with full documentation.
