The Schengen Visa is a short-stay visa that allows travelers to enter and move freely within the Schengen Area — a zone comprising 27 European countries that have abolished passport and immigration controls at their mutual borders. With a single Schengen Visa, travelers can visit multiple member countries without needing separate visas for each one.
Schengen Area countries include popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Austria, Portugal, and many more.
The Tourist and Visit Visa (Type C Schengen Visa) is issued for purposes such as:
- Tourism and leisure – sightseeing, holidays, and exploring multiple European countries
- Visiting family or friends – attending weddings, celebrations, or spending time with relatives residing in a Schengen country
- Business visits – attending meetings, conferences, trade fairs, or negotiations
- Short-term cultural or sporting events – attending festivals, competitions, or exhibitions
- Medical treatment – short-term private medical care in a Schengen country
- Allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period
- Valid for travel across all Schengen member countries during its validity
- Can be single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry depending on approval
- Does not permit employment or long-term residence
- Requires proof of intent to return to the home country
- Requires valid travel medical insurance covering the entire Schengen Area
Who Needs This Visa?
Travelers whose nationality is not part of the EU/Schengen visa-exemption list must apply for a Schengen Visa before traveling, regardless of which member country they plan to enter first. Applications are generally submitted through the embassy or consulate of the main destination country — or the country of first entry if travel plans include multiple destinations.
