The USA Tourist and Visit Visa, officially known as the B1/B2 Visitor Visa, allows foreign nationals to travel to the United States temporarily for tourism, business, or family visits. It is one of the most commonly requested US visas and is divided into two main categories:
- B1 Visa (Business Visitor) – for attending business meetings, conferences, negotiations, consultations, or settling an estate, without engaging in employment
- B2 Visa (Tourist/Visitor) – for tourism, vacation, visiting family or friends, medical treatment, or participating in social events, conventions, or short recreational courses
In most cases, both categories are combined into a single B1/B2 Visa, allowing flexibility for travelers whose trip includes both business and leisure purposes.
Key Features:
- Typically valid for multiple entries over a period of up to 10 years (validity varies by nationality and reciprocity agreements)
- Each individual stay is generally authorized for up to 6 months, as determined by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at the port of entry
- Does not permit paid employment or study leading to a degree
- Requires proof of strong ties to the home country
- Requires demonstration of sufficient funds to cover the trip
- Subject to an in-person interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in most cases
Documents Typically Required
- Valid passport with validity extending at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
- Completed DS-160 online nonimmigrant visa application form
- Visa application fee payment receipt
- Passport-sized photograph meeting U.S. visa photo requirements
- Appointment confirmation for the visa interview
- Proof of financial means (bank statements, sponsorship letters, employment income proof)
- Evidence of ties to the home country (employment letter, property documents, family ties)
- Travel itinerary, including flight and accommodation details
- Purpose-specific documents (invitation letters for family/business visits, conference registration, event details)
- Prior U.S. visa or travel history, if applicable
Who Needs This Visa?
Citizens of countries not part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) must obtain a B1/B2 Visa before traveling to the United States for tourism or business purposes. Even travelers from VWP countries eligible for ESTA must apply for a B1/B2 visa if their visit doesn't meet ESTA conditions (e.g., stays longer than 90 days or certain travel history restrictions).
